Bible Verses About Love

Love is not just a feeling the Bible describes — it is the very character of God, and the standard He calls us to live by. Scripture doesn't leave love vague or sentimental; it gives it shape, patience, and a face.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). Every other kind of love we know is only a reflection of this first, greater love — the one that gave everything.

Paul described what that love looks like when it's lived out: "Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up... beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things" (1 Corinthians 13:4, 7). It is patient with people, not just tolerant of them.

John goes further and ties love directly to knowing God: "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love" (1 John 4:7-8). Love isn't just something God does — it is who He is.

And Jesus gave His followers a simple way to be recognized: "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another" (John 13:35). Not by our arguments or our certainty, but by how we love.

Lord, thank You for loving me first, before I had done anything to deserve it. Teach me to love others the way You have loved me — patiently, generously, without keeping score. When love feels hard, remind me that it was never meant to come from my own strength alone. Amen.
