Prayer for Intercession: Pray for Others (Catholic)
A prayer for intercession to lift up others before God, with prayers for the sick, for loved ones, and for those far from faith, and how to pray them.
Merciful Father, I come before You today not for myself, but for others.
You know each name I carry in my heart, and You know their needs better than I do. Where I do not know what to ask, I trust Your love. Where I can see only worry, You see the whole of their life.
Be near to those who are suffering in body or mind. Comfort those who grieve. Give courage to those who are afraid, and light to those who feel lost. Bring home anyone who has wandered far from You.
Lord, hear the prayers of Your Church. Unite my small prayer to the prayer of Jesus, who is always at Your right hand interceding for us. Grant what is best for each person I name, and give me the patience to keep praying.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Short Version
Lord, hear my prayer for those I love and for everyone in need today. You know their names and their needs. Care for them as only You can. Amen.
Intercession for the Sick
Lord Jesus, You healed the sick and comforted the suffering. I bring before You the one who is ill, whom I name in my heart now. Ease their pain, steady their fears, and give strength to those who care for them. If it is Your will, restore their health. In every case, let them know that they are not alone. Amen.
Intercession for Someone Far From God
Heavenly Father, You never stop searching for Your children. I pray for the one I love who has drifted from You. Soften what has hardened, heal what has been wounded, and place good people in their path. Give me patience and a gentle heart, and let my life be an honest sign of Your love. Amen.
Intercession for Family and Friends
God of every home, bless my family and my friends. Keep them in Your care when I cannot be with them. Where there is tension, bring peace. Where there is need, provide. Where there is joy, let it deepen. Make us a source of strength to one another. Amen.
What Intercession Means and How to Pray It
Intercession is praying on behalf of someone else. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes it as a form of petition that follows the prayer of Jesus, who is always interceding for us (see CCC 2634). When we intercede, we share in His care for the world.
How to pray for someone:
- Begin with God, not the problem. Take a quiet moment and remember He loves the person more than you do.
- Say the name. Praying a name aloud, or writing it down, keeps your prayer specific.
- Ask simply. You do not need perfect words. Describe the need honestly, then trust God with the outcome.
- Keep going. Many people keep a short list of names and pray through it each morning or evening.
- Offer it up. Catholics often offer a decade of the Rosary, a Mass, or a small sacrifice for a particular intention.
Catholics also ask Mary and the saints to pray with us. This does not replace prayer to God. It is like asking a friend to pray for you, except the friend is already with Him.
When to pray it: whenever someone comes to mind, before Mass during the prayers of the faithful, and in the hard moments when you feel unable to do anything else. Praying for others is one thing we can always do.
Scripture to Pray With
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
1 Timothy 2:1 (KJV)
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
James 5:16 (KJV)
Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Romans 8:34 (KJV)
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Ephesians 6:18 (KJV)
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2 (KJV)
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Matthew 5:44 (KJV)
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a prayer for intercession?
It is a prayer offered on behalf of another person or group, asking God to help, heal, comfort or guide them. Catholics see it as sharing in the prayer of Christ, who intercedes for us.
How do you pray an intercessory prayer?
Name the person, describe their need honestly, and ask God to care for them. Short and sincere is enough. Many people keep a list and pray through it daily.
Does intercessory prayer work?
Scripture encourages it, for example in James 5:16 and 1 Timothy 2:1. Catholics trust that God hears these prayers and answers them according to His wisdom, which may not look the way we expect.
Why do Catholics ask saints to intercede?
Catholics believe the saints are alive in Christ and can pray for us, just as friends on earth pray for one another. We still pray to God, and ask the saints to join us.
Can I intercede for someone who does not know I am praying?
Yes. You do not need their permission or knowledge to pray for them, and praying for someone is a loving act even when you can do nothing else.
