Catholic Morning Prayers: Simple Daily Routine

Catholic morning prayers for every day: the Morning Offering, Our Father, Hail Mary and Guardian Angel prayer, plus a short routine that takes five minutes.

The Morning Offering

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in reparation for my sins, for the intentions of all my relatives and friends, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father.

Amen.

Traditional Catholic Morning Offering, as printed by EWTN and Catholic Culture. Some versions differ slightly in wording.

A Short Prayer to Begin the Day

Good morning, Lord. Thank You for this new day and for the breath in my lungs.

Before the phone, the news, and the to-do list, I want to give You the first moments. Be with me in every conversation today. Slow me down when I am rushing, and soften me when I am impatient.

Give me the grace to notice the people who need a kind word, and the courage to speak it. When the day goes wrong, remind me that You are still here.

And when evening comes, let me be able to say that I spent the day with You. Amen.

Short Version

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You all that I think, say and do this day. Amen.

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Prayer to Your Guardian Angel

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

A Simple Catholic Morning Prayer Routine

Catholics have long begun the day with prayer, offering the hours ahead to God before anything else asks for our attention. You do not need a long book. Five quiet minutes is enough, and you can add to it over time.

A routine you can follow:

  1. Make the sign of the cross. "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen."
  2. Say a word of thanks. Thank God for the night's rest and for the day ahead, in your own words.
  3. Pray the Morning Offering. This gives the whole day to God: your work, your joys, and your struggles.
  4. Pray the Our Father and a Hail Mary. These two prayers are known by heart by most Catholics and fit into any morning.
  5. Ask your guardian angel for help. The short prayer above takes about ten seconds.
  6. Name your intentions. Think of one or two people to pray for, and one thing you hope to do well today.

Tips that help: pray before you pick up your phone, keep the prayers somewhere you will see them, and tie the habit to something you already do, such as the first cup of coffee. If you miss a morning, simply begin again the next day. The aim is to turn toward God, not to be perfect.

You can also add a reading from the day's Mass or a Psalm if you have a little more time.

Scripture to Pray With

My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.

Psalm 5:3 (KJV)

Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

Psalm 143:8 (KJV)

It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Catholic morning prayer?

The best-known is the Morning Offering, in which you give God your prayers, works, joys and sufferings of the day. Many Catholics also pray the Our Father, a Hail Mary and a prayer to their guardian angel.

What should a Catholic pray first thing in the morning?

Start with the sign of the cross and a word of thanks, then the Morning Offering. There is no required order, so use what helps you turn to God.

How long should morning prayer take?

It can take as little as two to five minutes. A short prayer prayed every day is better than a long one prayed once in a while.

Is there a short Catholic morning prayer?

Yes. A single line such as "O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You all that I think, say and do this day" is enough on a busy morning.
